The Farm Forestry Program 1996-2002
The aim of the Farm Forestry Program was to encourage the incorporation of commercial tree growing and management on cleared agricultural land into farming systems for the purpose of wood and non-wood production to increase agricultural productivity and to promote sustainable natural resource management.
Farm Forestry takes many forms, including timber belts, alleys and widespread tree plantings. Farm forestry provides farmers with an alternative source of income. It improves agricultural production by providing shelter for stock and crops. It also provides substantial environmental benefits such as water table and salinity reduction.
The Australian Government allocated nearly $17 million to farm forestry under the Wood And Paper Industry Strategy and under the Natural Heritage Trust, a further $41 million over four years was provided to farm forestry (including $19 million from Bushcare, the national vegetation initiative).
