National Strategy for Low Rainfall Farm Forestry
There is general acceptance of the principle that perennials, especially trees and shrubs, must be widely integrated into agriculture across the southern Australian wheatbelt to better manage natural resources, in particular, to help relieve extensive land and water degradation due to salinity. There is also general acceptance that the necessary scale and cost of adoption of perennials is too large for it to be accomplished by volunteer or publicly funded activity. Hence there is a pressing need to develop and implement farm forestry – the use of commercial tree and shrub crops as part of agricultural systems. This strategy was published in December 2000 and aims to show how this might be done.
