Private Forest Development Committees
PFDCs work closely with local and regional stakeholders, industry and government to assist forest industry development at a regional level. They were formerly known as Regional Plantation Committees and were established under the Farm Forestry Program (1996-2002). Their roles vary from region to region. All of them play a role in communication and in addressing issues that hinder forest development. As well, some focus on co-ordination of farm forestry activities, or on providing opportunities to farmers, or on facilitating plantation industry development or assisting industry and government to communicate with each other about mutual concerns.
There are 19 PFDCs in the main plantation regions of Australia that are jointly funded by the Commonwealth and the responsible agency in each State/Territory through the Private Forest activities of the Natural Heritage Trust Extension. In the Northern Territory and Tasmania, the Forest Agencies serve as contact for information on regional plantation development matters.
PFDCs can help in the following areas:
- planning, infrastructure and industry coordination
- the development of regional feasibility studies
- the development of regional plantation and farm forestry strategies to encourage commercial forest-based industries
- formulating related marketing, investment and wood flow plans
- facilitating communication between stakeholders, and
- improving information flows on marketing and management of plantation and private forests.
For further information or help with farm forestry or private plantation matters, please contact the relevant PFDC in your area (below).
