Plantations for Australia the 2020 Vision

Plantations for Australia: The 2020 Vision is a strategic partnership between the Commonwealth, State and Territory Governments and the plantation timber growing and processing industries.

The overarching principle of the Vision strategy is to enhance regional wealth creation and international competitiveness through a sustainable increase in Australia's plantations, based on a notional target of trebling the area of commercial tree crops to around 3 million hectares by 2020.

The Vision was launched in 1997 and revised in 2002 by the Private Forestry Consultative Committee to take account of a number of developments.

The revised Vision has identified 16 actions broadly grouped under 5 strategic elements. Key actions are:

  • better regional planning and a comprehensive policy approach
  • setting the right legislative environment in place
  • promote investor confidence, research and development and skills development
  • improve stakeholder engagement and identify environmental benefits and services
  • monitor future developments and opportunities to maintain investment.

The full report and further information about Plantations 2020 is available from the plantations 2020 website.
