Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Senator Joe Ludwig, has today announced $225,000 in funding to continue the RIRDC Rural Women’s Award, Australia’s pre-eminent award for rural women.
The RIRDC Rural Women’s Award identifies and supports emerging leaders who have the capability and resources to drive innovation, productivity and sustainability within primary industries, while building economic and social development in rural communities.
Minister Ludwig, who today met with South Australian RIRDC Rural Woman of the Year, Mary Retallack, said the continued funding will support the awards up until 2014, and that it recognises the crucial role rural women play in rural and regional Australia.
“Women across the country are taking a lead in operations within the agriculture, fisheries and forestry sectors,” Minister Ludwig said.
“This funding will support women with demonstrated leadership capabilities who have the desire and commitment to make an even greater contribution to their industries and communities.”
State and territory winners receive a $10,000 financial bursary to implement their award vision.
Each winner and runner-up also has the opportunity to participate in an Australian Institute of Company Directors Company leadership course and is supported to develop an individual integrated leadership plan.
“Since commencing in 2000, the awards have supported more than 170 women representing every facet of primary industries, enhancing their leadership skills while inspiring others,” Minister Ludwig said.
“The award is a life changing experience that will open up a network of like-minded women across the country, passionate about primary industries and rural Australia.”
The RIRDC Rural Women’s Award is open to all women involved in primary industries and natural resource management and no formal qualifications are required.
