More than a Question of Numbers

Front cover for More than a Question of NumbersParticipation in landcare is voluntary - and that’s one of its strengths. A high level of participation is also essential if the partnership being forged between community groups and government is to successfully meet our natural resource and environmental management challenges. People become involved and participate in landcare activities because they recognise that the responsibility of maintaining and improving Australia’s natural resources is theirs, and that ultimately their livelihoods depend on it.

Participation in landcare has grown well beyond initial expectations. It includes people from a diverse range of backgrounds, although their representation in landcare groups and in landcare decision making structures varies from region to region and from issue to issue.

This report was commissioned by the Department of Primary Industries and Energy in response to prior research indicating that women in general should receive greater recognition in landcare. The findings of this report also confirm that the participation rates of people from non-English speaking backgrounds are relatively low. More importantly, the report offers valuable suggestions on how to increase their participation.
