Science Overcoming Salinity: Coordinating and extending the science to address the nation’s salinity problem (2004)

In June 2004 the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Science and Innovation tabled the report - "Science Overcoming Salinity: Coordinating and extending the science to address the nation’s salinity problem".

The Australian Government Response, tabled in December 2005, describes how current Australian Government programs, initiatives and activities satisfy the recommendations of the Report and continue to improve management of salinity by ensuring current salinity science, research and management options are available to resource managers at all levels.

Salinity mapping methods in the Australian context (2005)

The ability to effectively manage dryland salinity is dependent on an understanding of its causes, locations and behaviour in the landscape. Accurate mapping of saline affected landscapes and the pathways that control movement of salt through these landscapes is an essential tool to both understand the causes and progress remediation.

The following publications describe the methods that can be used in the Australian environment to gather and present information on dryland salinity: Salinity Mapping in the Australian Context and Salinity Mapping Methods in the Australian Context - User Guide and CD-ROM. The publications outline 26 methods that can be used to map salinity hazard and/or risk. The user-guide summarises the benefits and limitations of each mapping technique and has information on costs, scale and survey design.

Senate Environment, Communications, Information Technology and the Arts References Committee - Inquiry Report: Living with Salinity - a report on progress (2006)

On 17 March 2005, the then Senate Standing Committee on Environment, Communications, Information Technology and the Arts was asked to examine the long-term success of the Australian Government programs to reduce the extent and economic impact of salinity. The Senate released the report, Living with Salinity – a report on progress, in March 2006.

The Australian Government Response has considered the recommendations of the Senate Committee report and agreed, or agreed in part, with most of the recommendations. Full details of the government response is available on the website.
