Defeating the Weed Menace Program
The Australian Government committed $44.4 million over 4 years, from 2004/05 to 2007/08, for national action on Australia’s most threatening weeds through the Defeating the Weed Menace Program.
Weed control costs Australian farmers about $1.5 billion a year, with lost agricultural production estimated at more than $2 billion. Weeds are one of the greatest threats to biodiversity in Australia. Prevention and early intervention of weed spread is the most cost effective control strategy. New weeds are discovered each year in Australia. With many serious weeds already well established. A strategic national approach to weed management and control is essential.
The Defeating the Weed Menace Program identifies Australia’s most threatening weeds and implements management measures. These include on-ground control and eradication, research into cost effective management techniques and bio-controls for key weeds, and awareness campaigns.
The program will fund national projects and projects spanning several regions or states/territories.
The program is managed by the Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry and the Australian Department of the Environment and Heritage.
