Vegetation Information
Vegetation, with land and water, constitutes the natural resource base on which the Australian community is reliant. Vegetation is an integral part of sustainable agricultural production systems. Under the Natural Heritage Trust, the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry have invested in information systems for both the manager of vegetation and the policy maker.
For the practical manager of vegetation there is the National Vegetation Knowledge Service. As part of the National Vegetation Knowledge Service, Greening Australia has developed Bush Tracks - management for natural resource management shortcuts to vegetation. Research information overload is a real problem. This book aims to provide an insight into organisations, their programs and products. It is a quick reference guide to:
- organisations involved in researching vegetation solutions for natural resource management outcomes
- useful tools and products for planning, implementing or monitoring vegetation and natural resources.
With support from the Natural Heritage Trust and in partnership with State agencies, the Bureau of Rural Sciences has developed the National Vegetation Information System Index, a regional assessment of vegetation across the nation. The National Vegetation Information System Index provides easily accessible and nationally consistent Australian vegetation data including:
-
types of vegetation
-
extent of vegetation, and
-
condition of vegetation.
This data helps to make better natural resource management decisions.
