Water for the Future is a long-term framework to secure the water supply of all Australians. The Australian Government is investing $12.9 billion over ten years through Water for the Future to address four key priorities:

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has issued three new publications to assist irrigators, water brokers and water exchanges to understand their rights and responsibilities under the Trade Practices Act 1974.

An economic survey of irrigation farms in the Murray-Darling Basin

An Australian Bureau of Agriculture and Resource Economics (ABARE) report, funded under Water for the Future, surveyed 900 irrigation farms across ten regions in the Murray-Darling Basin in 2006-07.

Southern Basin - Restoring the Balance in the Murray-Darling Basin Program (water entitlement purchasing)

The 2008-09 southern Basin water entitlement purchase round is now open to willing sellers in the southern areas of the Murray-Darling Basin until 5:00pm (EST) 30 June 2009.

Grants for surf life saving clubs to save water

The Australian Government will make available grants of up to $10,000 to surf life saving clubs to install water saving and efficiency devices on club premises.

Green Precincts Fund

The Green Precincts Fund was announced in the 2008-09 Federal Budget to support at least 10 high-profile demonstration projects. The projects must deliver water and energy efficiency savings while at the same time educating the community about water and energy efficiency. Applications due 22 November 2008.

Northern Basin - Restoring the Balance in the Murray-Darling Basin Program (water entitlement purchasing)

The 2008-09 northern Basin water entitlement purchase round is now open to willing sellers of water entitlements in the Queensland and northern New South Wales areas of the Murray-Darling Basin until 19 December 2008.
