Regional Forest Agreement

New South Wales

New South Wales has three Regional Forest Agreements, covering 15.1 million hectares of the State.

The RFAs established a Comprehensive, Adequate and Representative (CAR) reserve system in the regions of about 3.8 million hectares.

The native forest timber industry in the three regions makes a major contribution to the State's economy.

Southern region

The Southern NSW RFA region stretches from the edge of the Sydney basin to the Victorian border and west almost to Albury. The RFA — signed by the Commonwealth and State governments on 24 April 2001 — covers an area of about 4.5 million hectares.

The CAR reserve system in the region covers more than 1.4 million hectares. It is about one third of the RFA region and three quarters of the region's public land.

The Southern region's $46.4 million public native hardwood timber industry accounts for about 28 per cent of the State's hardwood production. The agreement increased contracted timber supplies for the next 20 years.
