Wheat Marketing
Welcome to Wheat Marketing.
The Australian Government has reformed export wheat marketing arrangements. The new arrangements took effect on 1 July 2008.
The legislation providing the basis for the reform:
- Wheat Export Marketing Act 2008
- Wheat Export Marketing(Repeal and Consequential Amendments) Act 2008
The Wheat Export Marketing Act 2008 establishes a new independent regulator, Wheat Exports Australia (WEA), which will administer an accreditation scheme to control the export of wheat in bulk. Companies wanting to export bulk wheat must meet strict probity and performance tests to gain accreditation. Further information regarding the accreditation process can be found on the WEA website.
A number of information sessions were held by the government, in conjunction with state farming organisations. These provided growers with information about the changes, their impact and the opportunities they provide.
The government will also facilitate the delivery of key market information to the industry by providing up to $2.52 million over three years for the Australian Bureau of Statistics to collect the necessary information and for the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics to prepare a monthly report which will be available to industry. These reports are expected to be available from December 2008.
The Wheat Industry Expert Group (IEG) was appointed to advise on the delivery of industry development functions under the new wheat marketing arrangements. The IEG’s report was released on 16 May 2008.
The Wheat Export Marketing Consultation Committee’s (WEMCC) final report has now been released. The WEMCC was established by the previous government to undertake consultation with the Australian grains industry about future wheat export marketing arrangements.
